WHO WE ARE

The American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia (ACLU-WV) is a non-partisan, non-profit membership organization whose mission is to fulfill the promise of the Bill of Rights for all West Virginians and expand the reach of its guarantees to new areas.

While the ACLU affiliate in West Virginia was founded in 1971, the ACLU has had a presence in West Virginia since 1920, the year the national organization was founded. It was at that time the state tried to prevent miners from exercising their right to organize and bargain collectively by jailing them, and the ACLU sent lawyers to represent them.
