CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia advocates, medical providers, legal experts and others sounded the alarm Wednesday as oral arguments began at the U.S. Supreme Court in a case that could end access to safe, legal abortion.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia (ACLU-WV) is again asking Gov. Jim Justice to stop the practice of declaring the week leading up to Thanksgiving as “Christian Heritage Week.” Sadly, this is the 30th consecutive year West Virginia has made this declaration.

We have been informed the Randolph County Superintendent is withdrawing her recommendation to expel our client, who was facing an expulsion hearing for using social media to warn his LGBTQ+ classmates about violent threats he’d heard about them.

The American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia (ACLU-WV) will represent a Randolph County high school student who is facing expulsion for exercising his First Amendment rights to warn LGBTQ+ classmates of potential threats against their safety.

Tonight, Morgantown became the second West Virginia city to ban the harmful practice of so-called conversion therapy on minors. The vote was unanimous. We applaud Morgantown and Charleston’s efforts to protect vulnerable children from this malpractice.

A report from a doctor who has inspected 30 facilities across the country expressed “urgent concern” over what he called “the most dangerous approach to medical isolation I have encountered since the outset of the pandemic.” 

ACLU-WV and ACLU-WV United, the union representing most of its employees, have come to a historic agreement on a first contract. It improves wages and benefits, and helps foster a creative, equitable and inclusive workplace. We look forward to continuing the collective bargaining process.
