Tell us a little bit about your background.

Hi! I’m passionate about social justice, intersectional feminism, investigative reporting, strong coffee and great food. I am a recent graduate of the West Virginia University Reed College of Media where I earned a BS in journalism with a minor in womxn and gender studies. I’m currently studying for the LSAT while working for the ACLU and the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, Bureau for Behavioral Health. When I’m not working or studying I can be found making a new recipe in my kitchen or enjoying the outdoors with my girlfriend.

What about the ACLU of WV’s mission most resonates with you?

As an Appalachian woman and member of the LGBTQ+ community I am passionate about advocating for social justice in and around the hollers of the Mountain State. There is so much diversity in the Appalachian region that goes unnoticed. I’m proud of the rich diversity, culture and tradition in West Virginia, and just like the ACLU of WV, I’m dedicated to protecting it and making it better for all who live here.

What are you most looking forward to about this internship?

I'm looking forward to growing and formalizing my role as an advocate in the state. West Virginia is a special place with lots of unique people and needs. I’m excited to play a role in creating communication materials that will help tell the stories of the different communities around the state.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love to learn about food and the culinary cultures in different places. Food and food history connects us all in a cool and, in my opinion, undervalued way. The kitchen is a local intersection of chemistry, history and tradition through the medium of food, and I love exploring the lesser-known and appreciated stories that exist within recipes.
