Removing book would be clear violation of the First Amendment and numerous Supreme Court rulings

Parkersburg City Council might consider a resolution this week censuring the local library for having Maia Kobabe’s graphic novel “Gender Queer” on its shelves. Council members supporting the resolution wrongly claim the critically acclaimed book is obscene.

Today, ACLU-WV Advocacy Director Eli Baumwell sent a letter to council members urging them to oppose the resolution. Removing the book from library shelves would be a clear violation of the First Amendment and numerous Supreme Court rulings, the letter explains.

ACLU-WV will continue to monitor the situation.
