Our immigration detention system locks up hundreds of thousands of human beings unnecessarily every year. This system exposes detainees to brutal and inhumane conditions of confinement at massive costs to American taxpayers.
Recently, families fleeing persecution—many of them mothers and their children -- have been locked up in ICE detention centers. They have been living in neglect and horrific conditions.
Now, these women are facing something unimaginable.
According to a whistleblower complaint, this facility has performed a high number of hysterectomies on women who were unable to consent to the procedures because of language barriers and other issues.
Forced hysterectomies of immigrants is violent, grotesque, and clearly unconstitutional. Sadly, forced sterilizations have a long and shameful history in this country. We stand with those fighting to end these abusive practices.
ICE cannot be trusted with human life. Our system of immigrant detention cannot simply be reformed. It must be dismantled.
